Thari Multipurpose Cooperative was founded by 200 Lesotho citizens who work for Anglogold-Ashanti LTD, a gold mining company in South Africa. The objective for such a cooperative was to address the economic needs of those workers who face an often difficult life back home after retrenchment, which is a common occurence in the mining industry as a whole. This cooperative's aim is also to alleviate poverty and unemployment for women and youths in the rural areas of Lesotho.
Insufficient work opportunities in Lesotho means that a number of men who have to leave their families behind and move across into neighbouring South Africa in search of decent jobs is substantial. The mining industry, which is a primary employer of large numbers of semi-skilled workers presents such an opportunity for jobseekers from neighbouring countries- Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Swaziland etc.

Thari, is a cloth used to carry an infant securely on the back by women, mainly African women. It symbolises care, for the vulnerable.
We chose this name as it fits in with our objective of caring for those of us who are vulnerable at home, and those who become vulnerable because of sudden unemployment or illness. This organisation is evidence to everyone who learns about us, that we are prepared to roll back our sleeves to end poverty. Of course we welcome assistance, because we do realise that we can't do this alone.
